Frequently-anticipated questions:

What does this data set describe?

Title: SDETrims.DBO.Trans_Roads
Abstract:
The Texas Strategic Mapping Program (StratMap) section of the Texas Natural Resources Information System (TNRIS) - a division of the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) - has developed a GIS Transportation Feature Layer (Phase 2) for the entire state of Texas. The layer encompasses all public roadways in the state of Texas including city streets, county roads, state and federal highways, and interstates. Selected private roads and driveways will also be included where necessary to portray an accurate representation of the transportation network. This second phase of the statewide transportation layer contains 3.7 million records and has been spatially enhanced in specific areas. Due to the large size of the layer, the state has been organized into individual counties for ease of delivery and use.

  1. Who are the originators of the data set? (may include formal authors, digital compilers, and editors)

  2. Who also contributed to the data set?

  3. To whom should users address questions about the data?

Why was the data set created?

The primary purpose of the StratMap Phase 2 Transportation Layer is for cartographic and basemap functionality. The layer remains in the public domain and serves as a seamless transportation layer for emergency response and recovery, site location, and general mapping.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?

    (process 1 of 1)
    Metadata imported.

Data sources used in this process: M:\TNRIS-StratMap\TeleAtlas_TX\Metadata\TANA_metadata_FINAL.xml

Data sources used in this process:

    • C:\DOCUME~1\adube\LOCALS~1\Temp\xml16D.tmp

  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?

Stratmap street segments allow for six implied decimal places of precision. While minimum accuracy is consistent with 1990 TIGER/Line(R) files, accuracy is dependent on geographic area and sources used to update those areas. Realignment priority was given to 8 counties (Coryell, Jim Hogg, Kendall, Nacogdoches, Panola, Starr, Tom Green, and Zapata).

Tests are performed for invalid names, Feature Class Codes and characters. Tests are constantly running on the Tele Atlas(R) database to ensure segment topology meets Tele Atlas(R) specifications. The Streets layer is not generalized.

  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?

  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?

  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?

All street segments in the Tele Atlas(R) database with an FCC = A* are considered. A74 (driveways) and A75 (parking areas) are not selected. After processing, the dataset is checked for drawing display, correct number of records, record schema consistency with specifications, correct file naming, file sizes and a comparison check with the contents of the Tele Atlas(R) database at the time of creation.

  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?

Street data is crosschecked and verified using numerous independent mapping sources. More than 500 algorithmic QC checks are applied against the database to ensure that changes to geography and attribution conform to the Tele Atlas(R) internal Database Feature Modeling Specifications.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?

Are there legal restrictions on access or use of the data?

Access_Constraints:
The StratMap transportation layer is organized by county in both ESRI 9.x Personal GeoDatabase and Shapefile formats. The layer is available for free at www.tnris.state.tx.us, or can be purchased on CD. Contact TNRIS for more information.
Use_Constraints:
StratMap does not warrant this data for any particular use and is not responsible for any damages resulting from the use of the data. Users of the layer should be aware that (1) StratMap data are not authoritative representations of boundaries derived from transportation features, (2) StratMap transportation lines are subject to change and corrections, (3) StratMap transportation was generated from the best available data which is subject to change, and (4) StratMap is updating transportation data and has a process for collecting and noting transportation changes. Contact StratMap for more details. Acknowledgement of the StratMap program is appreciated in products derived and used from the data.
